SOMONAUK -- They will still be talking about this game weeks from now.
Newark junior Kyle Janssen and Somonauk sophomore Scott Powers shared the pitching spotlight as each spun masterful performances in Monday's Little Ten Conference battle. Janssen, who came in having not given up an earned run all season, struck out 10 in his 10 strong innings on the hill.
The southpaw Powers, making his first varsity appearance when he entered the game in the fourth, fanned 11 batters in his eight innings and earned the win as the Bobcats won 5-4 when they scored in the bottom of the 11th on a bases-loaded wild pitch, snapping the Norsemen's seven-game winning streak.
"Today was his first varsity outing, and it's not going to be his last," said Bobcat skipper Chuck Hauser about Powers. "He's been pitching his butt off down there (JV) and I've been searching for a No. 2 all year -- I think I may have found it. Every inning he came in from the fifth inning on we were asking him if he was all right, and anybody with any kind of drive is going to tell you no. When he comes to play, he comes to play."
In the bottom of the 11th, Somonauk's Chris Giesholt led off by being hit by a pitch from Mitch Dunlap, who had replaced Janssen. Giesholt moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on Dale Paull's infield single to short. Matt Hochstatter was intentionally walked to load the bases with no one out.
Dunlap's 1-1 pitch to Nick Duffield was swung on and missed, but the ball bounced in the dirt and to the backstop allowing Giesholt to come home with the winning tally.
"(Kyle) pitched 10 innings strong for me, so what more can you ask from the guy?" said Newark head coach D.J. Cocks on his ace hurler. "The reason we left him in was because he kept it under the 120-pitch mark (120 pitches, 83 for strikes), and you don't get him past that. He did a great job tonight."
Somonauk (9-6, 7-2) took the early lead when Paull walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, then scored on Hochstatter's double to right-center to make it 1-0, which was the first earned run given up in 32 innings this year by Janssen. The Norsemen (12-4, 5-2) scored their four runs in the third on a two-run single by Dale Johnson off Bobcat starter Hochstatter, an RBI single from Nick Verda and a balk giving NHS a 4-1 lead.
The Bobcats answered with two in their half as Josh Rivera scored on a throwing error and Hochstatter ripped a two-out RBI single. The hosts tied the game in the fifth on a Chris Giesholt run-scoring single to left, which was the last hit Janssen gave up as he retired the last 13 batters he faced.
"The main thing was from the third inning on we didn't score, and in six of those innings you don't get the leadoff man on, so you can't manufacture runs in any way, shape or form," Cocks said. "At the same time, you have to hand it to their pitcher. Powers came in and kept us off balance and pitched a heck of a game. He baffled us. Sometimes you have to tip your hat to the pitcher -- he was very impressive."
Hauser, while impressed by Janssen, hopes this game is one that gets the Bobcats moving in the right direction towards staying in the LTC race.
"That was amazing," Hauser said of Janssen's performance. "The kid is an excellent pitcher, and this was a pitching duel. Both teams played excellent defense, and luckily we made a few errors but were able to stem those and get out of the inning, which has been a problem for us.
"This is the game I'm hoping will turn it around for these boys. We've had a hard time this year with team unity and creating some sort of family atmosphere like we had last year. It was nice to see the guys do things for the team, their executing, and their doing what I ask. That's what we are going to have to do to win games."
