Manteno makes the most of eight hits in 7-4 victory over Sandwich

Manteno and Sandwich each put runners in scoring position on Thursday, but Manteno capitalized on more RBI opportunities, pulling out a 7-4 win at Sandwich.

Sandwich got nine hits compared with the Manteno's eight, but the Panthers caused Sandwich to strand 10 runners on base with some top notch defense. Manteno allowed only one Indian batter to reach on an error and that runner never got beyond first base.

Catcher Ryan Sample got on base three times for Manteno, scoring three runs and posting one RBI. He singled in the fourth inning and doubled in the fifth inning.

Paul DuFrain (4-1) recorded the win for Manteno. He allowed three runs over five innings. The Manteno pitcher struck out two, walked none and surrendered eight hits. Mark Reardanz (6-1) went to the mound in the bottom of the sixth inning for the Panthers and allowed only one hit, one run and one walk with one strikeout in relief. Reardanz to walk away with the save, his second this season.

Manteno didn't relinquish the lead after scoring three runs in the fourth inning on a two-run double by 1B Nick Kirchschlager and an RBI single by Reardanz.

Manteno brought home two runs in the fifth inning, and matched that run total in the seventh. In the fifth, Manteno scored on an RBI double by Sample, plating RF Joey DiLeo.

Kirchschlager, Sample and Reardanz each went 2-for-3 at the plate and racked up doubles. CF J.J. Witherow also contributed a double to the Panther effort.

The win places Manteno at 24-2 for the season and 8-2 in the Interstate 8 Conference, half a game
back in the South division. The Panthers take the weekend off and are on the road again Monday at Wilmington for another conference match up.
