Herscher 26-6, 10-3
Manteno falls to Herscher 2-0 in spite of Kirchschlager's performance

Second baseman Nick Kirchschlager went 2-3, but Manteno still fell to Herscher 2-0 in seven innings on Tuesday at Herscher.

Panther pitchers held Herscher to just five hits. Starter Joey DiLeo (0-1) struck out one, walked two and was tagged for both of Herscher's earned runs. DiLeo took the loss for Manteno. Sophomore reliever Jack Liss threw the final two innings giving up no hits and only one walk while striking out one.

Manteno's defense was solid, committing no errors during the contest but ultimately it was the lack of run support that doomed the Panthers. The only serious scoring threat by the Panthers came in the top of the seventh inning when they loaded the bases on a lead off single by catcher Ryan Sample. Two batters later, third baseman Billy Liss drew a walk. With two outs Kirchschlager reached base on an infield single, but DH Derrick Hosselton stranded all the runners with a ground out to second base to end the game.

The loss puts Manteno at 26-4 on the season and 10-3 in the Interstate 8 conference, tied with Herscher for first place in the south division.

Herscher went up for good in the third, scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly by Matt Guimond and an RBI single by Justin Ruckman.

Matt Webber got the win for Herscher. He tossed 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball. He struck out five, walked two and surrendered two hits. Herscher closer Jordan Ruckman put away the final two outs to record the save.

Manteno hosts Wilmington on Wednesday in a conference make up game from a May 1 rain out. First pitch is schedule for 4:30 pm.
