Manteno jumps on Peotone HS early and coasts to 14-4 win

A walk off double by CF J.J. Witherow capped an afternoon of scoring for the Manteno Panthers in their defeat of the Peotone Blue Devils on Monday at Manteno.

Manteno (19-1, 4-1) jumped out to an early lead as the Panthers capitalized on two first inning errors by the Blue Devils. The game was decided quickly as Manteno exerted its will early with nine runs in the first three innings.

A walk by 3B Billy Liss and a two-run double by SS Kevin Sloat in the first inning and an RBI double by C Ryan Sample, an RBI single by 2B Mark Reardanz, and a walk by 1B C.J. Irvin during the second inning supplied the early offense for Manteno. Sample got a hit in each of his three at bats.

Jason Morgan got it done on the mound on the way to a win. Morgan (5-0) allowed four runs over three innings. The Manteno pitcher struck out none, walked two and surrendered four hits.

Reardanz came in to relieve Morgan and the Blue Devils couldn't get anything going as long as Reardanz was pitching. Reardanz held Peotone hitless over two innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out none.

Manteno piled on three more runs in the bottom of the third. RF Joey DiLeo kicked things off with a double, plating Witherow. That was followed up by Sample's single, scoring DiLeo.

Manteno built upon its lead with four runs in the fifth. Liss' double got things going, plating Sample. That was followed up by Sloat's single, scoring Liss. Two Peotone walks set up the walk off doubly by Witherow to end the game after five innings.

Sample, who is batting a team high .533 on the season, was 3-for-3 at the plate with 3 runs, two RBI's and a walk. Liss and Sloat each went 2-for-2, and LF Adam Schaeffer and Witherow each contributed 2 hits. Peotone managed only one strike out against the Panthers all day. Witherow, DiLeo, Sample, Liss, Sloat, and Schaeffer all pounded out doubles.

The Panthers will face off against the Blue Devils again Tuesday in Peotone for the second game of the series. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 pm
