Slam Defeats Coalers
5/2/2014
Junior Jordan Colwell's fifth inning grand slam was the difference in the Comets'
6-4 victory at Coal City. With two outs, Colwell hit an 0-1 pitch over the left
field fence that jump started a Comet offense that was sputtering against Coaler
pitcher, Nate Chapman.
R-C had runners at first and third with no outs in the first inning and a runner
at third with no outs in the third. The Comets were unable to score in either
inning.
R-C didn't let Chapman off the hook, however, in the fifth. Chapman walked Tyler
Murawski to lead off the fifth. The left hander got the next two Comet hitters
before walking Jon Costain and Jordan Walden to load the bases. Colwell then
followed with his first career Varsity homer that gave the Comets a 5-2 lead
they would not relinquish.
Coal City had taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two RBI single
off the bat of Brad Littleton.
R-C would narrow the gap in the fourth when Colwell singled, stole second and
third and came home on an errant throw by the Coal City catcher.
Reed-Custer would add another run in the sixth after a lead off single by Mason
Dransfeldt. Dransfeldt stole second and third, before coming home on a fielder's
choice by Travis Schoonover. That made the score 6-2 in favor of R-C.
Coal City continued to battle as they scored single tallies in the sixth and
seventh innings to account for the final score.
Colwell lead the Comets with two hits. Schoonover would add a triple to the
Comets' six hit attack.
Thomas Youskevtch and Gubelman had RBI singles for Coal City.
Brent Headrick (7-1) went the distance for R-C, striking out 8 and walking 6.
