PREP SOFTBALL: Plano starts season with big win

Four Times-area varsity soiftball teams opened their seasons on Thursday, but only one -- Plano -- came out with a win.

Amid chilly temperatures, Sandwich, Somonauk and Flanagan lost non-conference games. Streator's sophomores, however, earned a victory against Seneca.

PLANO 16, WHEATON ACADEMY 3

At Wheaton, the Lady Reapers opened the season with a big non-conference road victory over Wheaton Academy.

Leading the 13-hit Plano attack were Roxy Mosca and winning pitcher Haley Secor who each had three apiece. Courtney Weeks and Christina Narciso both drove in three runs.

OSWEGO 11, SANDWICH 2

At Sandwich, the Lady Indians led 2-0 after three innings, but Oswego put up seven runs in the top of the fourth before adding three more in the sixth inning to pull away for the win.

"We played well for six out of the seven innings," said Lady Indians coach Beth Behringer, whose team opened the season against Oswego. "We were hitting the ball and (Oswego) made some really good catches. Our hitting needs to improve as well as our defense. We had six errors which led to seven runs. But, we did OK for our first game."

Losing pitcher Jami Swenson went 2-for-2 with a triple to lead the Sandwich offense. Cassie Teague added a single.

GENOA-KINGSTON 8, SOMONAUK 7

At Genoa, the Lady Bobcats were edged by a run in their season opener.

"I thought we played well against a very good team," Somonauk coach John Palmatier said. "We made three errors that led to five runs, but after the first inning, we play error free."

Jessica McCoy went 4-for-5 with three triples to lead the Lady Bobcats' offense. Losing pitcher Elise Siuda was 3-for-4 with a triple and double.

GARDNER-SOUTH WILMINGTON 6, FLANAGAN 0

At Gardner, the Lady Falcons dropped their opening game of the year.

Flanagan only had two hits for the game. Pitcher Sam Zehr was charged with the loss.

Haleigh Rose contributed three hits and Katie Cox, Sammy McMullen and Felicia Tafoya two each for SHS (4-0).
