Game three at Plano
Forreston 47, Putnam County 43
In a mild upset in game three at Plano, Forreston (7-3) used a strong free throw shooting performance by senior Chad Swanson late in the game to get by six seeded Putnam County 47-43.
Swanson hit seven-of-eight from the charity stripe all during the last 2:25 of play as the Cardinals came away with the opening round win in this their inaugural year at Plano.
“It’s great to get a first round win, especially against a quality opponent like Putnam County,” said Forreston head basketball coach Jonathan Schneiderman. “Swanson’s performance in the fourth quarter was huge, especially since we’re only shooting 55 percent right now at the line as a team.”
Swanson netted a game high 18 points for the Cardinals, while junior Kevin Fay headed Putnam County (5-3) with 15 points.
Forreston advances on to face Seneca at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, while Putnam County will battle Marquette on the consolation side of the bracket at 10:30 a.m.
