The Reed-Custer
Comets defeated Dwight 3-1 at Comet Park on the strength of Brent Headrick's
pitching and Travis Schoonover's bat.
Headrick (6-1) went the distance giving up 0 earned runs on 4 hits. The
lefty was in control the whole way striking out 5 and walking 1.
Schoonover was 3-3 at the plate, scored a run and hit a double.
The Comets trailed 1-0 after Dwight scored an unearned run in the top of
the second inning.
R-C knotted the score in their half of the frame when Eddie Wilkins lead
off with a single and Josh Bull followed with a bunt single. Nick Urban
followed with a bunt that scored Wilkins when Dwight threw the ball away
at first base.
R-C scored another run in the third. Schoonover lead off with a double,
stole third and scored on a wild pitch.
The Comets added another run in the fifth when Jordan Colwell lead off with
a walk, stole second, moved to third on a single by Schoonover and scored
on an infield ground out by Jon Costain.
Aaron Wyllie had 2 hits and scored a run for Dwight. Owen Pulver pitched
well but took the loss on the mound. Pulver allowed 2 earned runs on 7 hits,
struck out 6 and walked 3.
The Comets are 14-7 overall and 5-2 in the I-8 Conference.
Seneca 4, Coal City 5 - 8 innings
Coal City SUMMARY – We were lucky to come out on top. We had some crucial misplays and it almost cost us. We did a nice job of battling back.
Sophomore Matt Gubelman , making his 1 st varsity appearance, singled to lead off the 7 th . tanner Hanner scored the tying run and Lane Cowherd scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
Seneca played a very good game today. They are a very sound team
